Hamilton Academy Admissions Consultation

Having joined RMET (Rushey Mead Educational Trust) in September 2017, Hamilton Academy is its own admissions authority and as such has to establish its own admissions arrangements. The admissions policy for the 2019/20 academic year is presented here. The Academy has decided to remain part of the Leicester City admissions process and, therefore, the Local Authority administers all admissions to the Academy.

The difference to the Local Authority admissions policy is the addition of oversubscription criteria number 7 which gives priority to the children of staff in that academy. Note that this priority does not extend to the children of staff in other academies within RMET nor to staff employed centrally in the Trust.

The consultation period runs from 20 November 2017 to 19 January 2018 and allows anyone with an interest (for example parents, other schools and the local community) to comment about the proposed 2019/20 admission arrangements. You can comment by:

Local Authority (LA) Admissions Policy

Currently, the Admission limit for Hamilton for pupils in Year 7 is 240.

Admissions Criteria

The admissions arrangements for the school are controlled by the Education Service of Leicester City Council.

How to apply for a place for a pupil to begin Yr7 in September 2018:

An application for a place in a secondary school must be made to the local authority where your child lives (even if you are applying for a school in another local authority). If you wish to apply for a Leicester city school but you don't live in the city you must apply to your own local authority.

The easy way to apply is online at If you do not have access to the internet, you may wish to visit your local library where internet access is free. You can apply online anytime up to midnight on the 31st October 2017. Please note that applications made after this date will be treated as late. Please see the timetable below:

You will hear about your allocated school place on Tuesday 1st March 2018. A confirmation email and letter will be sent out.

For some schools there may be more requests for places than there are places available and it may not be possible to meet everyone preference. When this happens the LA applies the following criteria:

Oversubscription criteria for maintained secondary schools:

1. Children in the care of a Local Authority or who were previously in the care of a local authority. (See note 3)

2. Children who are on the 'list of children subject to child protection plans' and need to attend an alternative school to avoid the abuser.

3. Children who are both living in the catchment area served by the school and have brothers or sisters still attending the school at the time of their application and admission. Siblings must be in Year 8, 9 or 10 at the time of admission. (See note 4)

4. Other children living in the catchment area at the time of application and admission.

5. Children who do not live in the catchment area served by the school but who have brothers or sisters attending the school at the time of their application and admission. Siblings must be in Year 8, 9 or 10 at the time of admission (See note 4)

6. Children of parents / carers fleeing 'Domestic Violence'. (Subject to verification by a senior Social Worker or current City Council procedures for housing reallocation in cases of recognised domestic violence).

7. Other children whose parents have requested a place.

8. Children whose parents did not request a place by the closing date.


Within each criterion priority will be given to the children who live closest to the school. Distance will be measured on a straight line basis using a geographical information system measuring from the GEO code reference point for the child's home address to the GEO CODE reference point for the school. In the unlikely event that two applicants within a category live exactly the same distance from the school and only one place remains, the place will be offered to one applicant on the basis of lots drawn by an officer of the city council who is not involved in the administration of school admissions.

Multiple births:

If the final place available at a school is offered to a twin or triplet and the remaining sibling(s) would ordinarily be refused, places will be offered to the remaining sibling(s) at the same school.

Note 3: A 'looked after child' is a child who is (a) in the care of a local authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions at the time of making an application to a school. Previously looked after children are children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order.

Note 4: By siblings we mean a brother or sister, half brother or sister, adopted brother or sister, step brother or sister, or a child of the parent / carer's partner and in every case the child must be living in the same family unit at the same address.

In-year Transfers:

Some children may transfer to Hamilton at another time other than the usual start date in September, this is known as an In-year transfer. This may happen because you have moved into the city or have recently arrived from overseas for example. We would always encourage parents to think very carefully before requesting an In-year transfer for their child as this can potentially be unsettling for a pupil's education. Where possible, it may be best to wait until the normal transfer date in September.

However, for In-year school transfers for the academic year 2017/2018 you will need to complete an In-year application available online at Admission Online from Tuesday 1 September 2017.

Transferring between secondary schools within the city:

Once your child has joined a secondary school a transfer to another school is not normally recommended. This is because changing school is likely to have a negative impact on the continuity of a child's education. We would therefore recommend that you work with your child's current school to resolve any issues that you may be concerned about.

If, after careful consideration, you still feel that you would like to request a transfer for your child to a different city secondary school you will need to complete a School to School Transfer Form and take it to your child's current school for them to complete.

Your child must continue to attend their present school until they are admitted to another school (unless they can no longer get there due to a change of area).
Preparing to come to Hamilton mid-year:

You will be invited to an Admissions Interview with the Senior Vice Principal. It is important that you bring the following documents to this interview:
• The child's passport or birth certificate
• The completed Hamilton Admission Form - this will contain emergency contact details so it is vital that we have this completed

The child's parent must attend this interview. If the child is living with someone who is not their parent then the person with Parental Responsibility must attend the interview. It will be necessary to see proof of Parental Responsibility at the time of interview.

If your child has Special Educational Needs or medical needs please bring any relating documents or information that you have in connection with their needs. Sometimes an additional appointment will be made for you and your child to meet with our SENCO prior to starting at Hamilton.

If your child is coming from another school in the UK it is a good idea to bring completed work with you, such as Controlled Assessments for GCSE pupils, to ensure that important work does not have to be redone.

Following your interview you will be given a date to return for testing, and a start date which the date that your child will start at Hamilton. It is important that you keep to all these dates as failing to do so may delay your start with us.

The tests are for literacy and numeracy, and give us an idea of your child's ability so that they can be correctly placed in teaching groups. This helps to get them off to the best possible start and is nothing to worry about.

On their start date your child will be given a full induction, including a tour of the school. They will be introduced to their Form Tutor and, where appropriate, will be given a 'buddy' who will help them to settle in.

Children are expected to be in full uniform on their start date. You will be given the opportunity to purchase uniform either on the day of your Admissions Interview or when you come in for testing.
