Teaching and Learning

Design Technology at Hamilton Academy is forward looking, progressive and exciting. It is driven by enthusiastic cohesive staff, which believes that Design Technology education plays a vital role in preparing young people for lives in a complex environment.
The aim of the Faculty is to provide a lively, stimulating environment for all people to develop their creative talents, approaches to problem solving, communicating as an individual and part of team whilst gaining subject expertise and knowledge. Students are encouraged to be responsible for their own learning through a variety of resources, advice from teaching staff and develop a mutual respect for their own work, environment and that of others. Students feel safe and valued and can develop the skills to work co-operatively and safely with teaching staff, their peers and other adults.

KS3 - Students access a wide range of cooking skills and theories related to food and Nutrition. The main topics are

  • Personal hygiene and kitchen safety
  • Macronutrients
  • Functions of ingredients
  • Food Poisoning/ safe food handling

A heavy emphasis on cross curricular study is covered at Key stage 3 to get students ready for GCSE after year 8.

KS4 - We are currently delivering the GCSE AQA food preparation and nutrition course at Key stage 4. The main topics of study are

  • Food, nutrition and health
  • Food science
  • Food safety
  • Food choice
  • Food provenance

Enrichment:

In the Design Technology Faculty you will find that there is a wide variety of enrichment activities and Study Support opportunities to get involved in. Textiles students have the opportunity to take part in the annual Leicester LEBC Fashion show at the Athena. In addition, we offer weekly study support sessions for GCSE subjects and half-term revision sessions.

Staffing and Facilities:

  • The Design Technology Faculty has an experienced team of 9 teaching staff and a technician.
  • We teach in a suite of large, modern and well equipped Design Technology rooms. Our department is made up of two food rooms, two well-equipped workshops with attached CAD CAM facility, a Textiles room and a Graphics suite equipped with PCs. The department also has its own laptops which can be used in each specialist environment.
