Teaching and Learning:

English and English Literature are taught to all pupils in both Key Stages; a love of English is a life skill and one which we seek to promote through a carefully constructed learning environment firmly focused on developing a pupil's full potential and through a curriculum which meets the needs of all of our learners. Within the English Faculty we strive to establish a safe, secure and friendly environment for learning which inspires students to become independent and confident learners. We promote fair and disciplined learning which promotes mutual respect and encourages high expectations.

At both Key Stages pupils study a broad and balanced curriculum which includes: studying and analysing a wide range of modern and historical fiction and non-fiction literature including poets and dramatists; learning and transferring the skills of creative and transactional writing and undertaking speaking and listening activities which support students to analyse the spoken word. Furthermore, we look to inspire creativity and engage our pupils in active learning in a number of interactive ways. These include the use of ICT, Media and Drama.

At Key Stage 3 pupils follow the National Curriculum programmes of study.

At Key Stage 4 pupils prepare for GCSEs

The English faculty also offers the opportunity for students to study Film and Media Studies at GCSE level. In both of these courses students have the opportunity to analyse a range of media texts in a relevant and interesting way. Students need to be analytical, creative and practical and will be assessed through a series of examinations in Year 11. The exam board is Eduqas.

Students studying these courses can progress to A Level, University and a range of media-based careers.

Curriculum Plans

We believe that learning goes outside of the classroom and beyond the school day. In the English Faculty you will find that there is a wide variety of Enrichment activities and Study Support opportunities to get involved in. Our Year 8 trip to The Globe Theatre to see Shakespeare transformed from the page to the stage is always popular. In addition, visits to meet famous authors such as Malorie Blackman and Anthony Horowitz are firm favourites. Click here to read more: Enrichment
